the circle of life: birth, health, and death in my game

I thought I’d pop out a quickie gameplay post that I’ve been meaning to talk about. Population, aging, births, and death!

As it stands, my TS4 game has nearly 350 “playable” sims, meaning sims that are living in houses, tracked in my databases, and played occasionally in the rotation. You wouldn’t know most of these sims. Many of them haven’t worked their way into my story yet even as background fodder, but I’ve made them myself and would welcome them to date my sims someday if they want. Any other townies in the townie bin I couldn’t care less about. They are marked as unplayed and the game can cull them if it wants to.

So here comes the math: to keep about 350 sims at an average life span of about 75 years, I need to add about 2 sims per aging year in the town. How it actually works out is that there are fewer older sims than younger ones, as sims start to die off in their 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. So what I aim for then is 3-4 sims born into every aging year.

Drown #7.5: welcome home

June 2085 — Stephanie Nova and Justin Kim are 25, Jeremiah Day is 28, Willow is 3, Lily is 2. Keri Riley is 24. Lucy Harris is 19, Violet Deppiesse is 55.

Jeremiah's next call came in the morning. In the daylight now, everything seemed lighter and less scary. The girls were awake and running between rooms in the hallway, singing and laughing. Maybe it was just the dark that made things scarier, all the shadows, all the unknown. Or Jeremiah seemed happier today, at least.

"You thought I was mad at you last night? Not at all. You’re being dramatic, Stephanie. You’re always such a downer, always picking out the worst in everything, mountains out of molehills."

You didn't see what you thought you saw. 

"I don’t do that," Stephanie said.

June 2085 — Stephanie Nova and Justin Kim are 25, Jeremiah Day is 28.

Justin had Stephanie's earlobe between his lips and his body between her legs when her phone rang on the bedside table. "Don’t stop," she said. "Ignore it. I don’t care who it is."

So Justin didn’t stop.

Drown #7.3: the caretakers

April, 2085 — Stephanie Nova and Justin Kim are 25, Keri Riley is 24. Jeremy Nova is 69, Alice is 63, Lily is 2. Willow is 3.


You could see them up there in the daytime, if you looked really hard and in just the right light. Stephanie thought they looked like a swarm of metal insects, with their patterned synchronized movements. They didn’t seem to be doing anything at all that anyone knew of. They just flew.

After a couple of weeks, people began to go outside again once it became clear that the things weren’t trying to attack us. It was springtime at the end of the world, who wouldn’t want to see the trees and flowers blossom one last time? So people went jogging and walked their children to the playground. They should have been more unnerved than they were, maybe, but the sound these things made was not unpleasant.

Stephanie thought the sound was almost lovely, almost melodious, like listening to music as she ran. The things streaked across the sky at all hours, never stopping. The noise went on and on since they'd arrived, steady and constant, not enough to overpower the wind or the rain or the waves, but lying underneath it. It became the background noise of the whole world.

Rumors were that the military shot one out of the sky and was dissecting it. They were only rumors though. People talked on the sidewalks and playgrounds. People made up their own stories about what they didn't know.

Drown #7.2: first date at the end of the world

March 2085. Stephanie Day is 25, Justin Kim is 24.


Stephanie always knew that she wouldn't wear her wedding ring on her one real date with Justin before the end of the world. But she'd actually taken it off a few days ago and never put it back on. Justin hadn’t noticed yet. She didn’t know if she should make a big deal about it, if it warranted that kind of grand declaration or if she should just let it be.

She kind of wanted to see how long it would take before he noticed. She had this really great line planned. He would say, "Steph, you took off your wedding ring." And she’d say, "I had to, because it came from the wrong guy."

She giggled at the idea of it.

Then she finished dressing for her date. She tried to put on some makeup. She curled her hair as much as it would curl and she wove it into a loose braid. She wore girly shoes, even if they were flats. She sprayed some perfume onto her wrists and it somehow found her nose instead and made her sneeze.

Drown #7.1: the preparations

February 2085. Stephanie Day is 25, Justin Kim is 24. Alice Nova is 63, Jeremy Nova is 69.

Stephanie couldn't stop thinking about her wedding ring. She wondered what purpose it even served, since it clearly wasn't a magical force field that would protect her marriage. Justin took off his wedding ring three months ago, he cried for a minute or two, and he hasn't mentioned it since. He didn't seem the least bit bothered by it anymore, although she caught him sometimes staring at her ring and resigning himself to it with a soft sigh. She looked at her ring now, doubtfully, regretfully, and then she slipped it off her finger in one smooth motion. It came off as haphazardly as it went on in the first place.

It felt weird at first, although not entirely different. She slipped it back on, and then off again. She didn't own a jewelry box, so she tucked it into her sock drawer with what few pieces of jewelry she kept in a tiny wooden pillbox.

intermission: the peculiar wartime romance of Tyler Jackson and Maya Bunch

November 2083- February 2085. Tyler Jackson was 21, Maya Bunch was 24.

Tyler Jackson and Maya Bunch first met in Fort Palmetto, and then continued to get to know each other while they were both stationed at the Lunar complex. In the early years of the war, casual dating was quite common on base, and even allowed as long as both people did not work in the same department and signed a consent agreement. In the early days, the Lunar complex was far removed from the frenzy of what was going on with the Jupiter stations, which made it easy for people to mingle in their downtime.

Tyler met Maya over a game of chess in the common room. She won, and she won hard. Tyler was intrigued. Tyler was a newly recruited patrol shuttle scout. Maya was a aerospace engineer. They were a curious pairing, to say the least.

Drown #6: homecoming, part 2

October 2084. Keri Riley is 23. Justin Kim and Stephanie Day are 24. Willow is 2, Lily is 18 months.


One morning that week, after Justin went to work, Keri went to Stephanie's house. She was unsure whether this would be a necessary conversation or just a very bad idea. But there were things that needed to be said.

Drown #6: homecoming, part 1

October 2084, Keri Riley is 23. Justin Kim and Stephanie Day are 24. Jeremiah Day is 27. Willow is 2, Lily is 18 months.

* immediately prior to this chapter in the timeline would be Keri’s flashback story, “change my world”:  (never mind that I think I wrote that Madison had been up once before in April already—that piece had to be moved in the timeline a bit in revisions.)


Before he left with Keri's family to pick her up at the landing site in South Carolina, Stephanie told him, "I shouldn’t be there. It’ll be weird. It’ll be weird enough for you already."

She was right. It was weird. Medical staff were looking over the newly arrived earthlings, checking vitals, giving them juice to drink out of sippy pouches. The ones who had been up there a year took the longest to check out. They could have one family member present until they were cleared. Keri chose her mom, so Justin waited with Lily and Bryson.

Seeing his wife in the flesh left Justin feeling stumped. She looked exactly the same as when she’d left last year, yet he knew she’d become so much different. There were tiny scraps of some kind of feeling when he first saw her at landing—a thousand feelings battling for his mind and heart. He thought of what Stephanie said to him, “What took you so long?” What ever had him so enamored with Keri that he couldn’t see Stephanie standing right in front of him his whole life? Stephanie hadn’t been the kind of girl a typical teenage boy notices—she was reserved, tall and boxy, hidden under sweatshirts and baggy pants—and maybe he’d been entirely typical to fall for Keri who had sex written on her forehead. Well now he’d grown up and Stephanie had grown up, and he knew that what was hidden underneath all of those sweatshirts and baggy pants was wonderful. Now that she was married to someone else, and so was he. To think it could all be decided and over with before he even turned twenty. That wasn’t fair.

She didn't know though. "Remember that time in seventh grade when you dared me to drink pickle juice from the jar?"

"Are you saying my ice cream will be as bad as pickle juice?"

"No, I guess it can't be that bad. You first."

"Together," he said.

Justin woke up before Stephanie did. He hadn't slept so well in a very long time. He watched Stephanie's face change as she dreamed, and perhaps he'd never done that before. If he had, it hadn't been since they were children. He couldn't remember seeing the way her mouth pinched in and out of a frown and her brow furrowed with worry. He touched her arm. She breathed deeply once, exhaled, and then the furrow faded.

He wouldn’t kiss her again because he was angry. Stephanie should never be kissed out of anger.

Stephanie opened her email and froze when she saw Jeremiah's name. He was already back on Europa after his patrol duty, and she'd forgotten to write to him the whole time he was out. She felt like a monster.

She opened the message.

Dear Steph,

I guess I know now why they called up the coast guard reserves. We’re just out here sitting in ships, waiting for something to happen. Most of the time, nothing happens. Some day something’s going to happen and I wonder if we’ll know what to do.

Why aren’t you writing? I’ve been out for weeks and come back to nothing? That really sucks, when all the other guys have something to read and I have nothing. A guy’s gotta have something to look forward to, you know? To make it all worthwhile. Don’t you miss me? I sure as hell miss you. Write me or something. Send a pic of Willow.

Drown #3: teach me how to dance

February 2084. Stephanie Day is 24, Willow is 2. Justin Kim is 23, Lily is 15 months.


"We can't make it by today," Stephanie's parents would say on those rare days that neither of them could make the twenty-minute errand out to Lakeside Heights to make sure Stephanie was still alive. They acted like they'd left a small child at home and not a grown woman. "Do you have enough grocery money? Did you pay the electricity bill? Have you showered? Have you left the house this week at all?"

"I'm fine," Stephanie assured them.

"Maybe we'll send Aunt Sophie over to check on you."

"You don’t need to," Stephanie insisted. "I’m fine."

Although Stephanie had some doubts, they were mostly about color—buttercup or coral? She'd never decorated a room in her life, and she hadn't asked permission to decorate this one. Justin’s mother took the girls for the afternoon so that Stephanie wouldn’t have them crawling around the living room. It was cold outside, but she opened the windows and aired the room of paint fumes. She picked a brighter color. Her mother would probably hate it, but Stephanie wasn’t asking. It just felt like something that needed to be done, so she would do it. She would paint the living room yellow.

Drown #2: supernova

New Year's Eve, 2084. Justin Kim is 23. Stephanie Day is 24.

* TS2 pictures just because I had some that were sitting on my hard drive for almost 5 years that I never used! It won't be a regular thing though. ;)  New Year's Eve 2084 from Stephanie's point of view. This is the other half of that story, from Justin's point of view. 

Justin's mom had finished three glasses of wine and now she felt like telling embarrassing stories from Justin's childhood. She thought it was cute, but Justin wasn't amused. He was also too miserable to be embarrassed. This story was about that little boy he used to pick on outside Stephanie's house. "Do you remember how mad you used to get?" she said to him. "You'd come home all bent out of shape because she was playing soccer with that boy."

She was exaggerating, Justin figured. Bent out of shape? "I did not," Justin said.

"You did. You were so jealous. You'd come home ranting and raving. I always used to tell you, 'Why don't you just play soccer with them? Then you could all play together?' But you weren't the sporty type, were you? What was his name? Steph, do you remember?"

December 16, 2069

It had snowed and already melted, and now everyone lamented that there wouldn’t be a white Christmas this year. It was Stephanie’s tenth birthday, but they weren’t having a party. There were Christmas gifts to buy and dinner arrangements to plan and a large extended family to invite, but she could have Justin over for dinner and then they would have cake and ice cream and birthday candles later. Justin brought her two presents, each wrapped in different paper, because it was her birthday and everybody else was thinking about Christmas. “I didn’t want you to be sad,” he told her, and it made her heart feel warm. She hadn’t told him, or anyone, that having a birthday nine days before Christmas made her sad.

Justin and Stephanie, preface to an epic saga

This post is a recap I made, gearing up to begin this epic story, Drown, for Justin and Stephanie. You can absolutely just dive straight into chapter 1 here, but know that about a third of their story exists on the Lakeside Heights blog. Hence this recap, so you can skip reading those old stories if you’d like to begin here. 

I started writing this for NaNoWriMo 2015 and fell completely and hopelessly in love with it! Considering the outline for it, being at about 16 chapters at the moment (and not small chapters, either—full novel-sized chapters), I realized that the whole story is, in fact, about the size of a novel. Needless to say, I went back and forth and back and forth about whether it would be too big to do on the blog, much less too big for a simmed story (not even to mention that TS4 doesn’t have toddlers and there are many prominent toddler characters in this story).

This is a story I’ve wanted to share since I stopped blogging it five years ago on the LH blog. And the TS4 pictures I’ve managed to get from the game so far are just turning out so good. (Because you know, when the game cooperates and the scenes come into view, there is just something so rewarding about doing these sim-illustrated stories. So much so that I’m considering doing the book version of this as a partial graphic novel, because that’s something I’ve always wanted to do as well.) So whether it’s too big or not, the thing is that I started to blog pieces of it and now I can’t stop. So here we go.

There are essentially three parts to Drown. 1.) what happened on the old LH blog, 2.) what I’m posting here as round 2084: Drown, and 3.) the shared multi-family rotational timeline we will return to after Drown is over, which will, of course, include Justin and Stephanie and their whole crew. 

As for the first part, I don’t expect anyone to troll through an old blog full of hundreds of old stories to brush up on what happened to these guys before. So that’s why I’ve made this recap! There’s just too much to get through, and a lot of the older stories are quite sloppy, so here is a nice summary/reminder for everyone of what happened. However, I will also provide links in case anyone wishes to click over and read some of the older things (the ones that ever made it onto the blog, anyway).

gameplay notes on childhood education

I felt bad after I did these advisory sessions for my current group of high school seniors because I felt like among all of my teenagers, Reid would have probably benefited the most from a senior advisory session. But I wasn’t doing them back then. Most of my other kids had a pretty good idea of what they wanted to do, or at least, in which direction they wanted to start. But Reid didn’t know. He still doesn’t, really. He had no idea how he might apply his skills to the real world, or what he might do with himself besides becoming a bum or a criminal “just kidding, but not kidding.” He doesn’t have much confidence in himself.

Why is that? I don’t know. It’s not because of his parents, his parents are awesome. Or maybe it’s because they’re so blindly accepting of him and the rest of the world isn’t? He doesn’t fit the template of a “good kid” but he isn’t a bad kid, either. So he doesn’t understand where he fits into the grand scheme of things. He has also struggled to trust that Susie really loves him back or that she couldn’t find someone better, though he is gaining a little more confidence in that area, at least. I’m sure the friction with her mother doesn’t help, either.

So flashback to last year, if he would have had a senior advisory session, it would have said this. He’s currently ignoring the advice, of course. Or well, it probably looks like he's ignoring the advice, but I think it's all there, sitting in his subconscious for now.

aging and laws

There were a couple of things mentioned in the previous story set about the transition between childhood and adulthood (the teen years) and what things they are allowed to do, and when. Like when Reid mentioned that he wouldn't be allowed to rent an apartment until he was 19. These are rules I've made up for my worlds, in this fictional future, based partly on RL laws and also partly on what makes sense for my game.

For example, the age of majority needs to be 19 in my game rather than 18 or some other number, because I need high school aged sims to be able to use the in-game school system and many of my teenagers will turn 18 before they graduate high school.

Another example is that children and babies can be left at home in game, unattended, without any consequences. That just doesn't make any sense to me. So, even though my sims don't need a babysitter, I make them arrange one (like here) for the sake of realism.

So if you were a young sim living in my world, these would be the laws that governed your growing up.

SNU, rules and notes on a fake university

This topic was requested by an anon, but it's one I'm happy to talk about anyway because I've always loved running universities for my towns. I've been faking universities since the early TS2 days before the Uni EP came out. TS4 doesn't have a Uni EP yet, but like all the other versions of the game, I imagine we'll probably get one eventually. And when we do, like in the other games, I'll probably use some of it and mod the rest to work into my own custom university system.



why go to university?

I use a harder skilling mod because of the long lifespans I play, and my sims have plenty of drama and chaos in their busy lives that leveling up is actually very hard for them. Considering their 4 allowed play-days per year, and that they only skill when they want to (and for many of my sims, that is not very often at all!), many of my less studious sims never reach more than a level 2-3 in most skill areas.

The system I'm using was something I made up for my TS3 sims, but nothing really ever came of that project, so I'm using it again here with more luck. With the combination of harder skilling and my town career limitations, going to university is a real benefit for many of my sims.

a bit of backstory for Bell and Cam

The backstory for Ophelia's birth is a little all over the place between a few different blogs. She was born in the messy haze of my transition between playing TS2 and TS3, so I wanted to gather some of it together so people didn't have to do too much digging for this branch of the story.

Ophelia was conceived in TS2, on her parents' honeymoon, actually. Bell was worried then about losing her job. Her producers were annoyed at the first two surprise pregnancies, and when the third came along, she knew she was going to be in trouble. And she did lose that part in the end, especially as her pregnancy became complicated and she would not have been able to work at all for a very long time.

September 2084. The International Lunar Station. Keri Riley was 23.

Keri had fooled herself to think that she could ever be a warrior. She was a spoiled trust fund baby and pampered princess. She never got good grades in school, she was mediocre at sports, and she wasn’t exceptionally talented at anything except spending her daddy’s money. And later, her husband’s money, too.

Justin told her that he would support her, but he didn’t believe in her, either. She could tell. Nobody really believed in her. She’d never been any farther outside the reach of planet Earth than the moon’s orbit. She’d flown in one launch, and now she was here in these long gray rooms with fabricated air and gravity that was 83% wrong and dizzying at first. She wasn't allowed to zoom around the solar system in a little jet. It wasn’t her job to build systems or repair rockets. They would never let her mine ore or quarry rock. Keri’s job was to sit a small gray cubicle, look at a smaller gray monitor, and relay what information she was told to relay into a tiny gray headset wrapped around her ears.

Why couldn’t the headset be colored, at least? Emerald green, like the forests.

“It’s standard issue,” they said. “It just has to get the job done.”

Keri missed emerald green.

first comes love... gameplay notes on love and marriage in TS4

Jacob is a sweetheart. But he is also very trusting and naive and a little bit oblivious. Lauren is moody and dramatic and a little bit narcissistic. Are they a match made in heaven or hell? I don’t know, but I’m gonna throw my hands up at them and let them find out.

He has not dropped any pressing questions just yet, but he did say three very heavy words, and I caught him in this very romantic scene with a very telling thought bubble over his head. I do think that he means it. Whether or not he should mean it is another question entirely, but I do think that he’s in love with Lauren. He thinks about her constantly. He wants to kiss her and hug her when she’s near, and he’s rolled several very weighty engagement/marriage wishes for her. For a sim, in my gameplay style, that means love. And maybe that love will at best drive him crazy, and at worst destroy him. I guess we’ll see, but one way or another, he’s in love.

modified aging and pregnancy

Thank you to Dark Gaia for the aging mod, and Tanja1986 for the pregnancy mod, from which my own mods are tweaked.

First, before you install any of these mods, a couple of notes: 

Keep in mind that I DO intend to change the distribution of these ages in the event that we finally get toddlers, pre-teens, or any other aging stage. I do not promise to keep updating older versions of the mod, only the one that I'm currently using. 

Also note that I am NOT a modder. I know my way around S4PE, and I can tweak mods that other people have made, that's all. If a patch breaks these mods (which happens often!), I cannot fix them. I have to wait for the original creators to update first, and then I'll update my versions. If you use any crucial game mod (like aging and pregnancy are) that can't be taken out without messing up your sims' ages and pregnancies, please always wait before updating your game. You can continue playing in "offline mode" until updates are available. Sometimes this can take a couple of weeks... or longer, if a creator decides to abandon the mod. All of that is out of my control. 

Aging: 

My aging stages currently look like this. Ages are in "years."

0-1, baby
2-11, child
12-18, teen
19-35, young adult
36-59, adult
60-89 elder

On the "long" setting, there are 120 sim-days in a year. 120 x 89 = a total lifespan of 10,680 sim-days. Yes, that is LONG, lol! That's the way I like it. 

Medium is currently 30 sim-days per year. 

Short is currently 15 sim-days per year.

Pregnancy: 

My sims are pregnant for 90 days, to represent 9 months of a 120-day year. Note that this mod matches only the LONG setting of my aging mod, and it does NOT scale if you change the aging length. Tanja1986 at MTS does have some shorter versions available, too.

Dallas and Lucy, a history

This is just a bit of a refresher for those who read the TS2 version of Dallas and Lucy, or a history for those who didn't, and to fill in the missing gaps between where their story left off in the year 2084. I did make Dallas and Lucy as TS3 sims, but I never added them to my 1980's version of LH, so there was nothing missed in that "era."


First, a recap:

In TS2, the last we saw of Dallas and Lucy together was July of 2083. Lucy had just turned seventeen, and Dallas was eighteen. In the coming fall, Dallas would be going off to study abroad after winning a very prestigious scholarship, and Lucy would be stuck at home finishing out her senior year of high school. They only had a few weeks left together.
