a short break from reality, #1: bugs

March 2088. Justin Kim is 27, Stephanie Nova is 28, Willow and Lily are 6, Benji is 19 months.

“Bugs,” his landlord said.

The whole street in the plaza where Justin had just set up his brand new shop was infested. They closed up everything to fumigate for bugs. [SCCO mod removal error.] Unfortunately, for a worker-bee like Justin, there was no time to move his workbenches and equipment back home. No time to drape his works in progress. No opportunity to back up his files for remote work.

“It’s temporary,” his landlord offered. “I won’t be charging you rent for the weeks we’re closed down.”

“Well, I certainly hope not!” Justin said. “But what about my items? Are those sprays toxic to fabrics? Are people expected to bring those pieces into their homes?”

Martha rolled her eyes. “What exactly do you expect me to do about it? There’s bugs, so we fumigate. That’s what they said to do, so that’s what we’re doing.”

“But, all my work,” he complained.

“Do you think I’m happy about this? I have to throw out all of my pies and cakes. Probably your rugs and mirrors will be just fine.”

She had no sympathy for him. Not a drop. How childish, she thought.

How rude, he thought.

These two are so not best friends.

Justin wasn’t happy about his forced vacation. The only way he could make peace with the idea was to turn it into a real vacation instead. So they booked a country cottage in New Hampshire and went. Stephanie had been insanely jealous about visiting this place ever since she was passed over for that work field trip. Justin seized the opportunity to make that dream happen for her.

It was wet and dreary, but slightly better than being buried in blizzards back home with no work to do.

So they settled into their cottage, and while the kids explored the rooms and courtyards, Justin opened his computer. He isn’t working on this vacation… but he maybe might answer some blog comments and jot down some ideas for future content and pop off a couple of emails to potential collaborators and just bang out a chapter or two of that book idea he’s been picking at.

Then Lily breaks out a little bit of extra credit homework for kindergarten.

Like father, like daughter.

Willow met and befriended a bunny. She named him Cloudy because he was a little bit of an asshole and tried to bite her.

Later in the day, the rain cleared up enough for Justin to take the girls out for a little hike, and Stephanie enjoyed some quiet time while Benji napped.

That night, as Stephanie put Benji to bed, she was struck with a sense of longing for him to be little again. Oh, those days were hard, but she could handle it all so much better now. If only she had another chance. Maybe she needed another baby?

Crazy talk, because she also needed a bigger house first, a wedding, and a honeymoon. But maybe then, after all that, another baby!

Good night, good night little darlings. Don’t let the monsters bite. No nightmares, no potty accidents, and not a peep. Mommy and Daddy spent $700/night on this cottage, so it’s grown-up vacation time now!

Hopefully not actually making that fourth baby right now. They truly do not have room for another one, even as much as Willow is begging to live in a treehouse. They’re pretty sure that’s not legal.

The five of them ventured into town the next day to see the sights. It was a charming little place.

“Tag, you’re it!”

Oh, wait. They weren’t allowed to play that game. Or any games at all in this big open field that would be perfect for playing games.

Window shopping was restricted to quite literally shopping at the window. You can look at the pastries, but you can’t buy them here. You can look at the dresses but must buy them online. How frustrating

Behold! Justin finally stopped working and relaxed for a minute on his vacation!

The next morning, Justin was back at the “vacation work.” Stephanie raved to him about this big open floorplan—big kitchen, big living space, big bathrooms, big everything—and Justin took notes from their conversations for topics to write about in his blog. Inspiration everywhere, people!

They thought about it, talked about it, dreamed it over. Since they were now entertaining the idea of a fourth baby, it just seems sensible to consider moving into a larger house. They’ve pretty much decided to write it into their five-year plan.

Wedding, honeymoon, house, baby, hopefully in that order.

Stephanie would always carry a tender space in her heart for their tiny little cottage on Copper Hill, the first home they owned together, but she could definitely make space in her heart for a big open house with a huge kitchen, lots of bedrooms, and acres of land!

Plans. Wow, it feels so grown up. None of their other children or moves were planned, but they’re mostly more mature now. And better at money and birth control.

The week away was cozy and refreshing. They came home with rekindled ambition and new hopes and dreams.

Stephanie enjoyed her snowy winter garden for the last weeks before the seasons turned, and Willow made space in a carved-out tree stump for her grumpy rabbit friend to come visit.

And Justin returned to work—real work now—happy to find that his workshop looked just as he’d left it a couple of weeks ago. As it turned out, the bugs his landlord had worried about were a minor infestation. Upon further inspection, the building code surveyor found several other problems, bigger problems, that would cost some hefty fines.

Not for Justin, of course. He’s just renting this space. And now he’s ready and eager to get back to work.

notes: remembering TS2 Justin, nineteen years old, trying to do his Uni term papers while on spring break, lol! Some things never change.

Second time being hit with the “wild foxes” save bloat bug, but I had a much more recent save file this time. Only a few days of gameplay lost, as opposed to the month of gameplay I lost back in July. I honestly have no idea if HOB is fixed yet, and I don’t intend to visit until it is. Shame though, it’s such a pretty world.

  1. Okay, I need to have one of my sims befriend a bunny immediately! I haven't seen any yet but I haven't played a ton in Henford-on-Bagley. So cute! This was such a nice little holiday!

I missed your tweet about SCCO at the time but what a weird glitch! I'm glad you fixed it!

    1. I seem to be running into all the random weird glitches lately. I’m in the habit of doing a “save as” about ever week just in case, lol!

The bunnies are adorable! Considering I lost the gameplay associated with the actual bunny that Willow befriended, I had to unlock the stump with cheats and she befriended another bunny. You can place the stump on your home lot and the bunnies will visit. They are precious!
